Is Manila is common last name in Mexico & Latin America??

I'm just wondering cause my boyfriend is from Mexico %26amp; his last name is Manilla. What does Manila mean??

Is Manila is common last name in Mexico %26amp; Latin America??
This might not be correct, but...

Well, your boyfriend might have Philippine(é©´Philippian?) ancestors. The reason why I'm led to believe this, is because Manila was colonized by Spain, as was Mexico. So during that period, there were some Philippinians who arrived at the port of Acapulco.

You should read about the Manila-Acapulco Galleon trade.
Reply:I've never heard of that last name on anyone mexican I know. It will probably be more common in South America.

Manila doesn't seem to be a word in spanish (unless it's a regional South American slang word), but there's an important city in South Americ called that.
Reply:Manila is not a common name in mexico, infact this is the first time ive heard it.
Reply:Not at all...In my 3 decades as mexican. I have not known even one person which last name is Manila nor Manilla
