Latin name for spider?

Latin name for Pig is Porcus

I need to combine Porcus and whatever the latin name for spider is (please help with that). Also, Can ya help me with combining the to.THANX SO MUCH

Latin name for spider?
Martox's answer is OK, but two points:

1) aranea can also mean spider as well as spider's-web (as the link he has provided shows). Therefore, you can use either aranea or araneus to mean spider.

2) assuming you want to know "Spiderpig" (as in the song from the Simpson's Movie), you should not be wanting to say "Spider-and-pig". Instead, you want to join the two words in one of the following ways:

- porcaranea (feminine)

- porcaraneus (masculine)

- araneaporca (feminine)

- araneoporcus (masculine)

The last two are probably best, as they contain the elements for spider and pig in that order. If you're a girl and it's a nickname for yourself, I recommend araneaporca.
Reply:The most used Latin word for spider is "Araneus" (while "aranea" is the spider's web).

To put together with Porcus you'll need for a conjunction that could be "et" or "ac" or "atque" or also "que" added to the second name.

Therefore Pig and Spider would be either "Porcus et araneus" or "Porcus atque araneus" or "Porcus araneusque". You can pick the one you like the best since all above conjunctions are interchangeable...!!

However this is valid if both nouns are the subject of the sentence. Should them be the direct object (as in "I've seen a pig and a spider") they would change into accusative case and translate "porcum et araneum vidi" or "porcum araneumque vidi"
Reply:Just checked my book...it's araneus or arano. Plural is Araneae.

In a combo form, you could try something like porcarano or aranoporcus.
Reply:aranea
Reply:aranea is spider's web
Reply:Spanish word for spider is ara帽a. And pig is puerco.

See first part of Wikipedia article.

The Bobcat (Lynx rufus) is a North American mammal of the cat family, Felidae. With twelve recognized subspecies, it ranges from southern Canada to northern east Mexico, including most of the continental United States. LATIN NAME FOR AQUATIC HUMANOIDS?
I assume you're asking for a scientific name for a fictional water-dwelling humanoid creature, like a mermaid. What about Homopiscus aquarius?
Reply:Perhaps you are thinking of the "aquatic ape hypothesis".

It is a hypothesis put forward to explain why, compared with other apes, humans are almost hairless, have greasy skin, are prone to packing on the subcutaneous fat, and have a hooded nose that serves to prevent water from entering the nostrils, etc. Also, seafood could have been what caused humans to develop a larger brain.

No one has ever found any fossil evidence that aquatic humanoids or aquatic apes ever existed, so there is nothing to name.
Reply:If there were such a thing and it was relative to modern humans, it would probably be something like homo sapiens aquadomicilius (smart human water dweller) or homo sapiens piscus (smart human fish).

What is the latin name for 'paper'?

i'm trying to find out if there is an official name for the fear/phobia of paper, and if there isnt i'm going to make it up!

What is the latin name for 'paper'?
Latin for paper is 'charta', as in that famous big bit of paper (though when I saw it on display in Salisbury it wasn't so big after all, its just the writing on it was tiny) - the "magna charta".

Papyrus, as some have pointed out, is a Greek word. That pesky 'y' gives the game away.

'phobia' is Greek as well, and therefore philologists prefer to attach other Greek words to it, not Latin ones.
Reply:Papyrophobia is the word u r looking for, since for Romans the corresponding thing to paper was papyrus....

PS. i didn't know such a phobia existed....
Reply:Papyrophobia has been mentioned so I don't need to repeat it. Nevertheless the word has Egyptian roots and the Greek form was papyros which was latinised into papyrus. The papyrus plant was also referred to as bublos in ancient Greece and that is the root words like bible, bibliophil and so on.

The names of fears are often Greek not Latin e.g. Arachnophobia (give me a word, any word and I will prove to you how the root of this word is Greek) ;-)
Reply:hi, Papyrophobia is the official name for the Fear of paper and papyrus is the latin word for paper. ;)
Reply:Papyrophobia : Fear of paper

Vacansopapuroso-phobia : Fear of blank paper

Latin: Equuleus Pictoris. What are all the possible translations for the name of this constellation, please.?

You're getting off base with 'pictoris'. That does not mean 'painted or colorful'. I think you have that mixed up with another word - pictior. Notice the 'i' before the 'o'. That word is the comparative form of the adjective 'pictus', and it would translate as 'more colorful'.

Pictoris, on the other hand, is the genitive singular form of the noun 'pictor', which means 'painter'. The Latin genitive is used to show possession, so pictoris = 'painter's', or 'of the painter'.

Equuleus does equal 'little horse' (equus + diminutive form), but here is used figuratively - like English uses saw horse and pommel horse, and the 'horse' part means a stand or support - exactly like 'saw horse'.

The best English translation is 'easel', so Equuleus pictoris = Painter's Easel.

Actually, the English 'easel' comes from a virtually identical Latin trail. Easel%26gt;Ezel (Dutch for 'a ss', the animal)%26gt;Asellus (Latin 'asinus' + diminutive)%26gt; Asinus (Latin for 'a ss').

Close up the space in 'a ss'. Y!A doesn't like that word, even when it's the animal.

The painter's easel

Why is the name of the Country Germany in English, Alemania in latin Coutries, and Deutschland at home?

What is the history involved?

Why is the name of the Country Germany in English, Alemania in latin Coutries, and Deutschland at home?
Germany:

From Latin word Germanus, first attested in writings of Julius Caesar, who used Germani to designate a group of tribes in northeastern Gaul, origin unknown, probably the name of an individual tribe. It is perhaps of Gaulish (Celtic) origin, perhaps originally meaning "noisy" (cf. O.Ir. garim "to shout") or "neighbor" (cf. O.Ir. gair "neighbor").

Alemania:

name of a Suebic tribe or confederation that settled in Alsace and part of Switzerland (and source of the Fr. Allemand "German"), from P.Gmc. *Alamanniz, probably meaning "all-man" and denoting a wide alliance of tribes, but perhaps meaning "foreign men" (cf. Allobroges, name of a Celtic tribe in what is now Savoy, in L. lit. "the aliens," in reference to their having driven out the original inhabitants), in which case the al- is cognate with the first element in L. alius "the other" and Eng. else

Deutschland:

The name Deutschland and the other similar-sounding names above are derived from the Old High German diutisc which originally meant "of the people". This in turn comes from a Germanic word meaning "folk" (leading to Old High German diot, Middle High German diet), and was used to differentiate between the speakers of Germanic languages and those who spoke Celtic or Romance languages. These words come from *teuta, the Proto-Indo-European word for "people" (Lithuanian tauto, Old Irish tuath, Old English 镁eod).
Reply:AskAsk practically said it all.

I just want to add that in some Slavonic languages German is Niemiec, Nemet' or 袧械屑械褑. Which would literally translate as "mute". That comes from the fact that all those using Slavonic languages could understand each other to some degree and Germans were the only neighbors that talked in a way not understandable at all. because of that Germany in some of the languages became Niemcy (Polish) or something similar. In Some cases though the land itself goes back to Germany version - like in Russian 袚械褉屑邪薪褟.
Reply:OK It seems you already got the right answer.

Latin name for a plant?

Does anyone know the latin name of the Lemon Scented Geranium plant? please i really need to know :(

Latin name for a plant?
Pelargonium graveolens is a species of Pelargonium (commonly called geranium) with great importance in the perfume industry.

It is cultivated on a large scale and its foliage is distilled for its scent. P. graveolens cultivars have a wide variety of smells, including rose, citrus, mint, coconut and nutmeg, as well as various fruits.

However, the most commercially important varieties are those that have rose scents.

Common names include or rose geranium , old fashion rose geranium, and rose-scent geranium.

Pelargonium gravelons is also known by taxonomic synonyms "Geranium terebinthinaceum Cav." and Pelargonium terebinthinaceum .

"Rose geranium" is sometimes used to refer to "Pelargonium incrassatum (Andrews) Sims" or its synonym "Pelargonium roseum (Andrews) DC"

Commercial vendors often list the source of geranium or rose geranium essential oil as Palargonium graveolens roseum.

Pelargonium distillates and absolutes, commonly known as "scented geranium oil" are sometimes used to supplement or adulterate more expensive rose oils.

Can anyone translate my name into latin. My name is Darryl?

What does Darryl mean? You wouldn't translate the name, just the meaning. However, a Roman might have pronounced your name as Darrylis. (Roll the r twice as long, the a is short, like ah, and the y is pronounced like a cross between ooh and ee.)

Can anyone translate my name into latin. My name is Darryl?
You can't really translate it into Latin. Your name is Americanized. Popular Latin names back then would be like Quartus, Felix, Caecilius, Metella, Clemens, Marcus, Quintus, Grumio, Iulius.
Reply:Darryl is from the French name Airelle. It means open. In Latin that would be patefacio, expositus, directus. Try making a name out of that.

*
Reply:Try Darelus, Darielus, Darrielus or Darrylius.

There is no equivalent of your name in Classical Latin since it is a Middle English name derived from Norman French d'Airelle. Airelle is a town in Normandy.

However, it is possible to put your name in a Medieval Latin form much like Ronaldus for "Ronald." Some of Ronald Reagan's admirers refer to him as "Ronaldus Magnus" or Ronald the Great.

This is a take off on Carolus Magnus, or Charles the Great, the Latinized name of the famous Frankish king Charlemagne (in German Karl der Grosse)..

Sometimes there was no "one way " to translate a name or a neologism into Medieval Latin. It may have depended upon the monk or the scholar and whether he lived in Ireland, England, France, Germany or Italy.

So... for your name, you actually have several choices. I think the best ones would be: Darelus, Darielus, Darrielus or Darrylius.

does it need to be latin or do you mean a scientific name? Scientific names can be greek, or they can have your own name in them eg Johnston's freshwater crocodile is Crocodylus johnstoni

Thats not my name, obviously it wasn't me who discovered the freshwater crocodile of northern Australia. Because I'm too young. And I've never been there.

But if you're making something up, if you want it to be in the same group as a real animal have a look at this list of all the mammal groups: http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/si...

How do you say " Forever strong" in Latin. Potential name for my gym. Thanks?

Flebilis, flebilis, flebile - Abjective; lamentable, doleful, tearful, weeping.

Not a good name for a gym.

Semper fortis = Always strong.

That might work.

Semper validus is actually OK too.

How do you say " Forever strong" in Latin. Potential name for my gym. Thanks?
I would third Mark J's recommendation- It most accurately embodies the meaning you are trying to convey.
Reply:"Semper Flebilis" is the most accurate translation referring to 'human strength' rather than something like "Validum" which refers to 'strength of an argument'

Latin homework help ?! name any latin phrase you know and what it means!? pleasee?
The Ides of March fell upon March 15, and that was the day upon which Julius Ceasar was stabbed.

Here is a Latin Phrase: "Cogito, ergo sum." It means, "I think, therefore I am."
Reply:Glad to be of help. Report Abuse

Reply:Ignore the replies with negative ratings and use the other ones. The Latin phrase E pluribus unum means 'One out of many' in the sense of 'One thing made up of many parts' and refers to the U.S. being made up of the individual states, which originally were like separate countries. Aera explained the Ides of March very well. But not the basic concept, which is that the Romans had special names for certain days of each month and so did not count as we do from the 1st to the 30th or 31st day but rather according to these special names like Ides, Kalends, and so on. So the 15th would be the Ides, and the 16th would be the day after the Ides, and so on. I think this is more than enough for now.
Reply:'Non sum qualis eram'

(meaning 'I am no longer who I once was')...or something to that definition
Reply:Oh my goodness. Some of the answers you are getting are in Spanish, and some are gibberish (the always where under where one... geesh!)

Anwyay the ides of March is a date. The Ides falls on the 15th in March, July, October and May. The other months, it falls on the 13th.

This is the day when Julius Caesar was assassinated by a group of Senators. He was getting a bit too popular, though they claimed it was to keep Rome from having one man rule, like a king. Hah, do you think that worked?

Do you know what any of these mean?

That translates to foremost/chief/principal lodging. Seems to be a good name for a hotel, and since 'hospitium' was the source for 'hospitality' in English and 'primus' gave us 'prime' you have the thought of prime hospitality coming through.

Technically, 'hospitium' means more like lodging in an inn. Latin for hotel is 'deversorium', but I think the name with 'hospitium' comes out better.

"draco" is the latin name for dragon.

What is the latin name for dragon?
Draco est monstrum mythologicum quasi ingens serpens alatus.(in latin it means The dragon is a mythological creature that looks like a serpent )
Reply:The basic Latin word for dragon is draco.

Latin is a language with cases, which means that word order doesn't matter at all, and that each word in a sentence has a different suffix which tells you what part of speech it is in that context. Accordinly, there could be other forms of the word in a text. If you look in a dictionary, however, the word you will find is draco.

A dragon with a specific name would have the same name in Latin as it does in English.
Reply:Draco
Reply:Draco, borrowed from the ancient Greek drak么n, meaning "one who gazes hard."

The plural in Latin is dracones.

The Roman usually used epithets for these as well, e.g. Draco Hesperium (the Dragon of the West).

The bird called Dibon. This is not the Latin name but the local (?Malink茅) name.?

We are talking Guinea Africa not New Guinea. All I know is it stands maybe 3 or 4 feet tall, has a prominent ridge on its bill (I wouldn't know if it's too big to be a Hornbill) lives inland by marshy bits and has reddish shoulders. Also the call is so rhythmic as to give rise to the Mandinka rhythm named after it, Dibon. Looking for English or Latin Name

Whats the name of a latin pop rock song?

ok so when i was younger i recall seeing a video that had a girl singing with all these colors in the back and like i remember it was a woman lead singer i just want to know the name or if you have any other names that come into mind

Whats the name of a latin pop rock song?
Sound like a Shakira video from back in the day when she had Black hair and sang in Spanish---Back then alot of her videos looked like acid trip come to life. . .Ojos Asi (in Spanish), Un poco amor, and a few others. . .Other than that the only other colorful pop/rock latinas are Thalia, Paulina Rubia, and occasionally Gisele (but her beat sounded more salsa like).

In Guinea there is a large bird called "Dibon". Does anybody know what this is? I mean English or Latin name?

I would guess it is a Barbary Shrike or Boubou, because there is a Malinke song based on these birds. The male and female call back and forth to each other - you think it is one bird, but it is actually the two responding back and forth.

In Guinea there is a large bird called "Dibon". Does anybody know what this is? I mean English or Latin name?
Wow this was very difficult. There isn't much reference to the Dibon bird but much reference in the bible and religious material. I can't be for certain but I am leaning towards the Latin origin due to the significance of it religiously and the time period from which I have seen it used. Sorry I can' t be of more help this is all i could find.
Reply:Be aware when answering this one: we are not talking about the biblical Dibon. We are talking about a large bird in Guinea Africa.

What is the name Brandon in Latin?

Brandon does not have a latin base, it is prbably of Anglo-Saxon and Germanic origin.

Brandon

First name origin %26amp; meaning:

Old English: Fiery hill

First name variations: Branden, Brand, Bran, Brenden, Brendan, Brant, Brent, Brennen, Brennan, Branford

Last name origins %26amp; meanings:

English: habitational name from any of various places called Brandon, in County Durham, Northumbria, Norfolk, Suffolk, Warwickshire, and elsewhere. Most are named with Old English brōm ‘broom’, ‘gorse’ + dūn ‘hill’. One in Lincolnshire, however, may be named with the Brant river, on which it stands; Ekwall derives the river name from Old English brant ‘steep’, presumably with reference to its steep banks.

Irish (Kerry): Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Breandáin ‘son of Breandán’.

French: from the Old French oblique case of the personal name Brand, of Germanic origin

+

Brandon

This ancient and noble surname has a number of possible derivations. Firstly, it may be of Anglo-Saxon origin, as a locational name from any of the numerous places so called in Durham, Northumberland, Norfolk, Suffolk and Warwickshire. The placename in Norfolk appears as "Brandun" in the Domesday Book of 1086, and the same source records the place in Warwickshire as "Brandune". All of these placenames are derived from the Olde English "brom", broom, gorse, and "dun", a hill. However, in some instances, the surname Brandon may be of Old French origin, as a patronymic form of "Brand", which may derive from the Germanic personal name "Brando", a shortened form of various compound personal names containing the element "brand", sword, or a metonymic occupational name for a sword-smith, from the same derivation, with the patronymic suffix "-(s)on". Hence, "son of Brand" or "son of the sword-smith". The first recording of the surname (below) is from the Anglo-Saxon derivation. Charles Brandon (died 1545), first Duke of Suffolk, went on a royal mission to France in 1514, and although already married, secretly wed Henry V111's sister, the Princess Mary, in Paris; this second marriage was validated by a papal bull. Gerard Brandon was christened on October 7th 1717, at Crevic, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Leofric de Brandune, which was dated circa 975, in the "Pipe Rolls of Norfolk and Suffolk", during the reign of King Edward the Martyr, Saxon ruler of England, 975 - 1978.

The bird called Dibon. This is not the Latin name but the local (?Malink茅) name.?
The 'Dibon' or 'Dibbon' is the Abyssinian Ground-hornbill [Latin: Bucorvus abyssinicus] (also known as Northern Ground-hornbill). It lives in the Northern tributaries of the River Niger in Guinea and the Sahel of Sub-Saharan Africa.

The dibon pairs for life, and the pairs of birds spend the night sleeping in separate trees and early in the morning call to each other. The local people have found the calls of the dibon so complelling that supposedly up to 40% of the rhythms played in the local traditions in the range of the dibon are based on these calls.

Why is Latin used so much when it comes to naming new discoveries, heck half the moon has Latin names?

Is Latin the official language astronomers from all around the world?

Why is Latin used so much when it comes to naming new discoveries, heck half the moon has Latin names?
It is tradition. Most of those names were adopted centuries ago when Latin WAS the language of science all over the world, much like English is today.
Reply:Galileo gave the lunar seas the name Mare, and their individual names. He used Latin because it was the language of scholars in his day. Lunar craters, however, are named for people.

Celetial features such as nebulas, novas, and constellations have Latin names for much the same reason, the names began back a few centuries ago when Latin was still big.

Features discovered on moons and planets thanks to the space program follow all sorts of rules (for Mars it includes naming features after science fiction writers, among other things).
Reply:Latin is used to name not only in astronomy, but in other sciences as well, since centuries ago. Latin is a dead language, that is, it's not evolving, not changing like English, French..., and that's one of the reasons it is preferred by the scientific community, because it gives a sense of stability and continuity; also, it makes possible to avoid confusion between scientists of different countries, since the names are kept in Latin, no matter the native tongue of the scientist.
Reply:In the age of discovery Latin was the language of scholars. With so many languages in Europe Latin was used because a lot of the ancient scientific discoveries that were seeing the light of day for the first time in more than a millennium were written down by the Romans.

.

Studying the ancient writings is what started the Renaissance and the rediscovery of all the manuscripts could be done without being first translated into other languages, avoiding the problems of misinterpretation. That way everyone knew they were reading the exact same information.
Reply:Latin is an ancient Indo-European language that was originally spoken in Latium, the region immediately surrounding Rome. It gained wide currency, especially in Europe, as the official language of the Roman Republic and Roman Empire, and, after Rome's conversion to Christianity, of the Roman Catholic Church. Principally through the influence of the Church, it became the language of later medieval European scholars and philosophers.

Throughout most of the history of Western science, all scientific literature was written in Latin. Only recently has it been written in spoken languages like English. The use of Latin names has remained so that scientists that speak different languages can understand what they are talking about. Another reason is that many plants and animals have common names that differ by region. Having a Latin name avoids confusion among scientists.

That would probably be either Boca Juniors or River Plate, both of Buenos Aires in Argentina.

Generally, the big Argentinian clubs are much wealthier than the big Brazilian clubs.

I believe it is Corinthians (Brazil). They just sold Carlos Tevez and Javire Mascherano to West Ham though.

Most of the Brazillian clubs are poorly managed and almost all are more or less in debt.

Corinthians were in massive debt and near the point of being relagated until they were bought over by MSI. Now, there is internal rift, the club is still losing money. Its only a matter of time before they go back into poverty and mediocrity.

English to latin , the name mathew in latin?

i'm getting a tattoo and each word is written in a different language, and im having trouble with finding mathew in latin (actually its impossible) so anyone who knows latin that can help me out would be great!! Ta

English to latin , the name mathew in latin?
Mat(t)hew = Mattheus

Nolite iudicare, ut non iudicemini = Judge not, that you be not judged. That's from the Book of Matthew, Chapter 7, Verse 1.

Rain = pluvia. That's the most common Latin word for 'rain'.
Reply:As to the name Mathew it translates into Latin as Matthaeus.

Remember all the Latin words must be written in block capitals hence is MATTHAEUS or MBL for initials.

Initials are the same in Latin as in English...!!

EDIT - The word rain is in Latin "aqua" (same as water) but if you want to make an inscription, a tattoo, etc. this must be written in capital = AQUA and even more correctly AQVA since classic Latin hadn't the U letter - Same as above if you want to write the name as Romans were doing you should write MATTHAEVS.-
Reply:why do you want it done in latin if you dont even know latin???

that's ridiculous

have it done in english. because you're just going to have to read it to everyone!
Reply:A little off the topic but that quote is not exactly from Matthew. It's from Jerome's translation of Matthew. The original, in Greek is "me krinete hina me krithete". Sorry answers doesn't seem to support greek fonts.

What is the name of the latin song in the movie "The Mask"?

Remember when he's surrounded by the police and he breaks into that latin/salsa song and gets all the police to dance with him? I am looking for that song. If anyone could help, I would be much appreciative with 10 points! =)

What is the name of the latin song in the movie "The Mask"?
cuban pete
Reply:It's called "Cuban Pete" and you can get the soundtrack from Amazon.com (link below). Two interesting trivia bits about it ...

1) It's actually Jim Carrey doing the singing. He might have been lip-synching for those scenes in the movie, but he **did** record it, so that's his voice.

2) The bit at the end of the song where Carrey kisses a woman and she runs off screaming was totally spontaneous on Carrey's part. Not even the woman knew it was going to happen. Everyone liked it, so it ended up going into the movie.
Reply:Cuban Pete
Reply:yeah the guy above me is right and he should get the 10 points but i just figured i should say who wrote the song. It was Dezi Arnaz.

(The name kalium was taken from the word "alkali", which came from Arabic al qal墨y = "the calcined ashes".

Potassium was not known in Roman times, and its names are not Classical Latin but rather neo-Latin.)

I'm a Marketing Manager working in a real state firm I need 7 classy spanish-latin names for houses any ideas?

The more elegant and simple the names, the better it will be. I greatly appreciate your contibutions.

We already have 7 previous names that belong to the first part of the residential complex, they are fortunately already sold.

The names themselves though, are not simple to remember, easily confused and hard to write correctly. Mostly these names belong to african trees or rivers.

I already have a few names in mind, but want these 7 names to be absolutely the best possible.

The residential complex is located in Mexico, and we are a mexican company, the names don't have to be in spanish or any particular language, they have to be solid names.

So thanks for reading and for your contributions, this is my first contribution and you'll be hearing from me more often.

Take care and have fun.

I'm a Marketing Manager working in a real state firm I need 7 classy spanish-latin names for houses any ideas?
Hi Jacob:

Here's a quick suggestion that might be helpful. Will you be selling these homes to fellow Mexicans or to Americans? If you're going to be selling them mostly to Americans how about naming the home models after very upscale towns and communities in the US that have Spanish names?

For example - "Rancho Santa Fe" which is north of San Diego is the second most expensive zip code in the entire US.

"La Jolla" is on the coast and all million dollar plus homes. "Del Mar," "Encinitas," and "Malibu" are the same. "Topango Canyon" is where a lot of Hollywood movie stars have their mansions. Also, "Rancho Bernardo" is where a lot of top executives live. And "Santa Barbara" is another place where you find lots of very expensive, elegant old California manses and home to millionaires and billionaires. (I know that's 8 not 7 - but I got on a roll. *smile*)

Hope this is helpful to you.

All the best,

What does the name JESUS means in latin?

in other words, if you translate the name JESUS, what does mean in english language? someone please!!!

What does the name JESUS means in latin?
The word Jesus is the Latin form of the Greek Iesous, which in turn is the transliteration of the Hebrew Jeshua, or Joshua, or again Jehoshua, meaning "Jehovah is salvation."
Reply:Good work, Kim, except that God was known as Yawheh (I am) or El Alohim (sp), God Almighty. Since the ancient Hebrews did not like writing out the name "God" (some Orthodox Jews write "G-d" to this day), the two names were combined, Allowing for changes in pronounciation across languages and time, the end result was "Jehovah."
Reply:The English name “Jesus,” which later employed the letter “J,” is a derivation from Greek “Iesous” and the Latin “Iesus” version.
Reply:To Kim j - Nicely explained - Hallelujah!

It is required for a planet to have a Greek/Latin name? (in this Galaxy)?

Xeena???

I know theres talk about Xeena being concidered to be a planet, since it is bigger then pluto. Any thoughts on that?

It is required for a planet to have a Greek/Latin name? (in this Galaxy)?
Xena was only ever a working "nickname" and it is now officially known as Eris (the Greek goddess of discord,) Its Moon is now known not as Gabrielle but Dysnomia (Eris' daughter and the Goddess of Chaos and Lawlessness),

Under IAU rules, names must be pronouncable, preferably one word (such as Annefrank (5535 Annefrank)), although exceptions are possible (such as James Bond (9007 James Bond)), and since 1982 limited to a maximum length of sixteen characters, including spaces and hyphens. Letters with diacritics are accepted, although the diacritical marks are usually omitted in everyday usage. 4090 艠铆拧ehv臎zd is an asteroid with the most diacritics (four).

Military and political leaders are unsuitable until they are dead for 100 years. Nowadays, names of pet animals are discouraged, but there are some from the past. Names after people, companies or products known only for success in business are not accepted, as well as citations that resemble advertising.

Whimsical names can be used for relatively ordinary asteroids (such as 26858 Misterrogers), but those belonging to certain dynamical groups are expected to follow more strictly defined naming schemes.

Trojan asteroids (those that librate in 1:1 resonance with Jupiter) are named for heroes of the Trojan War. Asteroids at Lagrangian point L4 are named after Greek warriors (such as 588 Achilles) and asteroids at L5 after Trojans (such as 884 Priamus).

Trans-Jovian planetoids crossing or approaching the orbit of a giant planet but not in a stabilizing resonance are named for centaurs (such as 2060 Chiron).

Objects crossing or approaching the orbit of Neptune and in stabilizing resonances other than 1:1 are given mythological names associated with the underworld (such as 90482 Orcus).

Objects sufficiently outside Neptune's orbit that orbital stability is reasonably assured for a substantial fraction of the lifetime of the solar system are given mythological names associated with creation (such as 50000 Quaoar).

Objects that approach or cross Earth's orbit are given mythological names (such as 1862 Apollo.
Reply:It is not required for a planet to have a Greek/Latin name. An example is Earth: the name doesn't come from either language.
Reply:The answer is no. Most planets and stars simply have a name consisting of numbers and letters.
Reply:Nope --- Earth is neither. It's derived from the Germanic.
Reply:tradition says that it must be mytholigical....greek or roman doesn't matter...could be Aztec or Inuit.
Reply:I don't know if it is a requirement, but all the planets including the demoted Pluto are named after Greek mythological gods. Personally, I wish they would leave the planets alone. No point in changing all those textbooks.
