I'm asking cause my Spanish teacher was fron Cuba, %26amp; his name was "Mr. Dempster".We called him "Blade" also cause he looked like Wesley Snipes. It does not sound like a typical last name in Cuba.Your information, please.
Is Dempster a common last name in Latin America???
Cuba has a huge number of immigrants from many regions of the world due to colonialism and also industrialism. Many slaves who fled British colonies where slavery was legal were given freedom in Spanish colonies if they were to convert to Catholicism and swear allegiance to Spain. Many slaves from Jamaica and Haiti when to Cuba for their freedom. That is why it is common to see many English surnames such as Dempster, Knight (example is Celia's Cruz's husband, Pedro Knight) and Anderson (Alpharetta Anderson, who was born in Cuba later relocated to Jamaica and later became the world famous Rita Marley).
Chinese and Lebanese immigrants also came by the thousands to help the colony flourish. While Dempster is not a common name in the region, it might be common in certain parts of Cuba.
Reply:I'd say no, because Cuba was the drop shipment point for the English slave merchant ships. From there, the blacks went on to Texas slave markets at Galveston or they worked harvesting the Cuban sugar, that made the rum, that fueled the trade in slaves. Dempster is British and many slaves had their master's surname.
But, I choked when I read your question because the big trash containers that trash trucks use in America originally had the factory name of Dempster Dumpsters.
I might try your question with the buddies on my next fishing trip.
