I'm asking cause my Spanish teacher was fron Cuba, %26amp; his name was "Mr. Dempster".We called him "Blade" also cause he looked like Wesley Snipes. It does not sound like a typical last name in Cuba.Your information, please.
Is Dempster a common last name in Latin America???
no,it sounds british
Reply:Not at all common - there's none in the Havana phone book, for instance.
There was quite a lot of movement between Cuba and Jamaica.
Reply:no, its not a common latin last name.......
Reply:You're right it's not a typical latin name. But there are many who have emigrated to Cuba years ago and there is a large mix of various cultures from all over....from Arabic, Spanish, Jamaican, Chinese, British (they seized Cuba in the 1700's)...and the list goes on.
So obviously his ancestors came to the island before Communism took over and were not able to leave...or maybe family came over for business before or after the revolution.
Look at the link below to give you a bit more cultural/historical facts about Cuba.
But why don't you ask your teacher? He'll most likely be very happy to explain his history to you, especially as a teacher. And he'll probably be impressed that you're trying to learn more spanish history :-)
Reply:Not a common last name, but in Latin america came immigrants from all the globe, only not as much (in percentage) than in the USA.
Reply:No it's not.
However you much realise that communism tookver Cuba. There was a lot of migration to and from Cuba from some of the other caribbean islands.
A lot of these other islandsspeak germanic languages and its reflected in the names. His grandparents could have been from jamiaca, Bahamas, St vincent or another english speaking island.
Reply:Certaihly not a common surname but there is the possibility. I Checked the phone book below withno success.
Reply:I don't think it's THAT common..
