if there is one?!
What is the latin name for the dairy cow?
Cattle, colloquially referred to as cows, are domesticated ungulates, a member of the subfamily Bovinae of the family Bovidae.
Cattle did not originate as a name for bovine animals. It derives from the Latin caput, head, and originally meant movable property, especially livestock of any kind. The word is closely related to "chattel" (a unit of personal property) and "capital" in the economic sense.

Reply:In Latin, Romans called milk cows boves.
Reply:If you're looking for a species name specific to dairy cattle, there is none - all domestic catlle are in the same species, both beef and dairy.
If you're looking for a Latin word for dairy cow, the simplest would be 'vacca' - that's a female, as opposed to 'taurus', male. 'Bos' was the generic word. If you wanted to be more specific, 'vacca mulgenda' - that's 'a cow for milking'.
ADDED: To say that 'boves' are milk cows would be a shock to Latin writers.
Vt bos armenta sic - As an ox follows a herd - - M. Tullius Cicero, Letters to Atticus
In prato quondam rana conspexit bovem - An Ox the Frog a-grazing view'd - Phaedrus, Fabulae Aesopiae
nam hoc argentum álibi abutar: boves, quos emerem, non erant - there were no oxen for me to buy - T. Maccius Plautus, Persa
Hard to milk an ox.
And Ovid sure knew the difference;
Tu vir et in vacca conpare taurus eras - P. Ovidius Naso, Amores
Bos, bovis is the general word - all cattle - heifers, bulls, oxen, whatever. Vacca is the female, taurus the male.
