What is the latin name of the fly found on cowpats, that have a rich rusty-brown faded-suede colour to them...

i've always thought they were called horseflies, but have recently seen photos of horseflies...which look a pretty similar shape to a bluebottle.

the ones i am thinking of have a very beefy thorax like certain dragonflies.

Possibly the yellow dung fly - Scathophaga stercoraria.

These are certainly common around pats.

Collins Complete British Insects is a photographic guide which gets good reviews on Amazon - not got it myself (although tempted, now I've seen it).
Reply:not sure either, but they taste nice!
